Top Motorcycle Routes in Spain
The Pyrenees
The Pyrenees provide Spain's most Alpine-like riding. Key routes include the N-260 running the length of the Spanish side, passes like Portalet and Somport connecting to France, and the spectacular Aigüestortes region in Catalonia. Bear in mind the N-260's high passes see snow and chain requirements in winter, so this is largely a spring-to-autumn proposition — check conditions before setting off in the colder months.
Picos de Europa
Spain's most dramatic mountain scenery outside the Pyrenees. The roads through and around the Picos feature limestone peaks rising dramatically above green valleys. The N-621 through the Hermida Gorge and the road up to Covadonga offer exceptional riding. Note that in peak summer the final climb to the Covadonga lakes is closed to private vehicles and served by shuttle bus only, so plan around that. The famous Cares Gorge, incidentally, is a walking trail rather than a road — a hike, not a ride.
Sierra Nevada Circuit
Europe's most southerly ski resort sits above the ancient city of Granada. The A-395 climbs to over 2,500 meters, while the Alpujarras region on the southern slopes offers whitewashed villages connected by engaging mountain roads. Because this is a ski area, the high roads carry snow and can close in winter — it's not a year-round high-altitude ride, though the lower Alpujarras stay accessible far longer. Save the summit road for late spring through autumn.
Costa Brava (GI-682)
The corniche road between Tossa de Mar and Sant Feliu delivers classic Mediterranean coastal riding. Tight corners, dramatic cliffs, and turquoise coves create one of Spain's most photogenic routes.
Andalusian White Villages
Andalusia's pueblos blancos perch on hilltops connected by winding roads through olive groves and mountain terrain. The routes around Ronda, Grazalema, and the Serranía de Ronda offer exceptional winter and shoulder-season riding — high summer here brings punishing heat inland. Worth knowing: the Sierra de Grazalema is one of the wettest spots in Spain, so pack for rain even when the rest of the south is baking.
Mallorca (Tramuntana Mountains)
The Ma-10 along Mallorca's northwest coast ranks among Europe's finest coastal roads. The UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana provides challenging mountain riding with Mediterranean views at every turn.
